Ismail Hadjibekir – Service Director
A fiber laser cutting machine is one of the key machines in the production process of many manufacturing companies. Its reliable operation directly affects productivity, the quality of finished parts, and the ability to meet customer deadlines.
A modern fiber laser is a complex, high-tech system in which mechanics, electronics, CNC control, the laser source, optics, cooling, pneumatics, and motion systems must operate in constant synchronization.
This is why purchasing the machine is only the beginning. Long-term reliability requires professional installation, correct operation, well-trained operators, high-quality consumables, regular preventive maintenance and, above all, professional service support that can respond when needed.
At Karmet Bulgaria Ltd., our care for the machine begins before the first part is produced and continues throughout its entire service life.
Everything Starts with Professional Installation
Service support does not begin when the first technical problem occurs. It starts with the delivery, installation and commissioning of the machine at the customer’s facility..
Correct installation is the foundation for the reliable and precise operation of every fiber laser. Our service team therefore pays particular attention to machine positioning and leveling, mechanical and electrical connections, process gas and cooling systems, the optical system, axis movements, and all other elements that affect the machine’s correct operation.
Our job is not simply to switch on the machine and confirm that it operates.
The machine must be handed over to the customer fully prepared for real production.
Once installation is complete, we perform the necessary inspections, adjustments and cutting tests. The machine is delivered with tested cutting parameters for different materials and thicknesses within the capabilities and configuration of the specific machine..
This provides a significant advantage for the customer. Instead of spending valuable production time after installation searching for the correct cutting speeds, power settings, gas pressures, focus positions and other technological parameters, operators receive a machine with a prepared set of tested parameters and can move into real production significantly faster.
Specific parameters may require further optimization depending on the type and quality of the material, the process gas being used and the requirements for the finished part. However, our main objective remains clear:
The customer should start producing parts, not start configuring the machine from scratch.
Operator Training Is an Essential Part of Correct Machine Operation
Even the best installed and configured machine cannot reach its full potential without properly trained operators.-
For this reason, professional operator training is an essential part of commissioning every fiber laser machine we deliver..
Our goal is not simply to show the operator how to start the machine and load a cutting program. The training is conducted in detail and hands-on, ensuring that operators thoroughly understand the machine's capabilities and can use them effectively in daily production.
We present in detail the functions of CNC control and software, The preparation and loading of programs, working with the technological parameters, the settings for different materials and thicknesses, and the management of the cutting process. We demonstrate the capabilities and features of the specific machine configuration so that the customer can actually use the potential of the equipment they have purchased.
Special attention is also paid to daily maintenance. Operators receive practical instructions on what to check, clean, and monitor, as well as the first signs of a deviation from normal operation.
A well-trained operator can recognize a potential problem at its early stage – before it turns into a serious failure and unplanned production downtime.
Prevention is better than repair
Fiber lasers operate at high speeds, accelerations, and prolonged production cycles. This inevitably puts a strain on the mechanical and other components of the machine.
Therefore, periodic maintenance according to the manufacturer's instructions should not be perceived as a recommended activity that can be constantly postponed.
When the necessary inspections, cleaning, lubrication, and servicing are not performed in a timely manner, a relatively minor problem can gradually lead to wear and subsequently to a significantly more serious failure.
Special attention should be paid to the condition of the steering, rack, pinion, reducers, lubrication systems, servo drives, Z-axis system, cooling, pneumatic systems, and other components specified for periodic inspection in the technical documentation of the specific machine.
Contamination, insufficient lubrication, incorrect settings, and prolonged operation with a component that is already worn out can not only lead to a deterioration in the cutting quality, but also to subsequent overload of other components.
Therefore, preventive maintenance is almost always the better solution than repairing after a serious accident has occurred.
The optical system makes no compromises
One of the most sensitive areas in fiber lasers is the optical system.
The cutting head operates with concentrated laser energy of high power and even the slightest contamination of certain optical components can have serious consequences.
That is why when an optical problem arises at „Carmet Bulgaria“, we approach it with extreme caution. We leave nothing to chance – every step is carried out in a controlled and consistent manner.
The assembly of sensitive optical components in the cutting head or in the cartridges designed for them is performed in a specially designated clean environment, protected from dust and pollution.
This is necessary because even a small particle on an optical surface can interact with the laser beam, leading to local heating and subsequently to damage to the optical component.
In optics, cleanliness is not a matter of good practice; it is part of the correct servicing procedure.
Checking the fiber cable before installing the cutting head
A particularly important procedure for us is the inspection before installing a new or refurbished cutting head.
We do not accept that once the cutting head is new or repaired, it simply needs to be installed and the machine started.
Before the connection We must always check the condition and cleanliness of the optical interface of the fiber cable using a microscope..
The presence of contamination, traces of thermal impact, or other visible defects is checked. Only after it is confirmed that the interface is clean and there are no indications of damage do we proceed with the installation of the cutting head.
The reason is very important – if there is a problem with the fiber cable or its optical interface and a straight cutting head is connected to it, there is a risk that it will be damaged as well.
In optical systems, the correct sequence of diagnostics is just as important as the repair itself.
Quality consumables protect the machine
Proper maintenance of the fiber laser does not end with routine maintenance and professional service. It is also extremely important to the quality of the consumables used.
It is recommended to use original consumables or those with proven quality and complete compatibility with the specific machine and cutting head.
Choosing solely on the basis of the lowest price could subsequently lead to much higher costs.
This is especially critical for protective optical elements. Low-quality protective glass, improper coating, inaccurate dimensions, or manufacturing defects can lead to increased absorption of laser energy and overheating.
As a result, not only the consumable itself can be damaged, but also significantly more expensive components of the optical system.
The same applies to the other consumables. An inaccurate nozzle, incorrect geometry, or an incompatible component can affect the quality and stability of the cutting process.
That is why we consider the consumables not just as a periodic expense, but as part of the proper operation and protection of the machine.
The savings from the quality of a relatively inexpensive consumable are not worth it when, as a result, a component worth thousands of euros may be compromised.
Cutting with compressed air – cleanliness is of critical importance
In addition to oxygen and nitrogen, some customers choose to use Compressed air as a technological gas for laser cutting.
This may be an effective solution for certain materials and applications, but it places serious requirements on the system for producing and preparing compressed air.
It is not enough for the compressor to simply provide the necessary pressure and flow. The quality and cleanliness of the supplied air are of critical importance.
The air must be properly prepared and as clean as possible – without any presence of moisture, oil and solid particles. Therefore, the customer must take serious consideration when choosing the correct compressor, dehumidifier, filtration system and other components for preparing the air according to the requirements of the specific machine.
It is especially important to prevent contamination of the optical system. The ingress of oil, moisture, or fine particles can contaminate the protective optical elements, reduce their operational life, and create conditions for more serious and costly damage.
The savings from using compressed air only make sense when it is achieved. without compromise on air purity, cutting quality and machine protection.
Good diagnosis seeks the cause, not just the consequences
When a technical problem arises, proper diagnosis is crucial.
In the case of a cutting quality problem, the cause is not always the cutting head. It may be related to optics, technological parameters, altitude calibration, the nozzle condition and centering, the supply of the technological gas, cooling, mechanics, or another component of the system.
Replacing parts without establishing the actual cause can temporarily alleviate the symptom, but it does not guarantee that the problem will not recur.
Therefore, our approach is to monitor the machine's behavior, analyze the symptoms, and sequentially check the possible causes.
After a repair has been carried out, the machine should not simply start up. It must be tested and verified in real working conditions.
Fast service is part of productivity
In production, one of the most serious problems is not only the damage itself, but also the time during which the machine is not working.
Any unplanned stay can mean delayed orders, a disrupted production schedule, additional costs, and missed deadlines for the end customer.
That is why for us, the service doesn't end with the sale of the machine. We strive to ensure that our customers receive the necessary technical support. both during the warranty period and after its expiration.
However, a quick response only has real value when it is supported by technical knowledge, proper diagnosis, and access to the necessary spare parts.
Spare parts in stock are part of the quick service
At „Carmet Bulgaria“ Ltd., we maintain Significant stock of spare parts and consumables for fiber laser cutting machines, the ones we serve.
Our goal is to be able to react as quickly as possible in the event of a technical problem and, when the required component is available, to avoid prolonged waiting for delivery.
Maintaining our own warehouse is an essential part of our service strategy. We know that for many of our customers the fiber laser is the one of the main machines in the production process and his stay could affect the entire subsequent organization of the production.
One stopped machine can mean a delay in subsequent operations, a violation of the production schedule, and a risk of failure to meet the deadlines for completed orders.
That is why for us, servicing does not only mean identifying the cause of a given problem.
The goal is to get the machine back into production as soon as possible.
The combination of a qualified service team, professional diagnostics, and availability of key spare parts and consumables allows us to reduce the response time and repair time to practically the minimum possible.
The warranty ends. The maintenance of the machine – no.
The fiber laser is a long-term production investment and its operational life is significantly longer than the warranty period.
That is why professional after-warranty service is so important.
Knowing the machine, the history of repairs and maintenance performed, using the correct spare parts and consumables, and periodic control of key systems allow a number of potential problems to be identified before they lead to a prolonged production stoppage.
For us, the responsibility towards the customer does not end with the expiration of the warranty. The goal is for the machine to continue working reliably, precisely, and productively for years after its commissioning.
The service is part of the machine
When choosing a fiber laser cutting machine, power, speed, equipment, and technical specifications are only part of the solution.
Equally important is the question:
What will happen when the machine needs technical assistance?
Does it have a qualified service team? Can it respond in a timely manner? Does it have the necessary diagnostic equipment? Does it know the mechanical, electrical, control, and optical systems? Are spare parts and consumables available? Will it continue to service the machine after the warranty expires?
For „Carmet Bulgaria“ Ltd., professional care of the machine begins with its installation. It continues with the adjustment and testing of the parameters, professional training of the operators, preventive maintenance, proper diagnostics, quality consumables, availability of spare parts, and timely service response.
Because the true performance of a fiber laser is not measured only in power and meters per minute.
It is also measured in the time during which the machine is ready to produce.
