The fastest laser is the one that keeps running.

When an Improvement Actually Makes a Machine Worse

One of the recurring problems I have observed with different manufacturers over the years is the constant desire to “improve” a product that is already working reliably.

Development is necessary. Without it, there is no technological progress.

The problem begins when a new solution, component, software update or mechanical change is implemented too quickly, without sufficient testing under real production conditions.

I have seen well-performing machines lose reliability and productivity precisely because of changes introduced in the name of improvement.

This has shaped a very clear principle at KARMET: Not every new solution is automatically a better solution.

A technology should first prove its reliability before it becomes part of a machine we are prepared to deliver to our customers.

Before Choosing the Machine, Understand the Customer

In my opinion, one of the biggest mistakes in selling a fiber laser is starting the conversation with:

“How many kilowatts do you need?”

That should not be the first question.

First, we need to understand what the customer actually wants to achieve.

What materials do they process? What thicknesses? What are their typical parts? How many hours per day will the machine operate? What matters most to their production – maximum speed, cutting quality, low operating cost, flexibility, or a combination of these factors?

One customer may need maximum productivity.

Another may be focused on keeping the initial investment as low as possible.

For another, cutting quality may be far more important than absolute speed.

The right machine starts with understanding the customer correctly.

This has always been one of KARMET's fundamental principles.

A Cheaper Machine Is Not Always a Cheaper Investment

Today, price has an enormous influence on purchasing decisions.

I completely understand this.

When we entered the laser technology market years ago, an investment in this type of equipment could easily be around EUR 300,000. Today, the initial investment for certain configurations can be only a fraction of that amount.

This has made fiber laser technology accessible to many more companies, which is a positive development.

But it has also created another problem.

Machines are increasingly compared mainly by their purchase price.

I believe this is a mistake.

Two machines with the same laser power and the same working area can have very different real production costs per part.

The difference comes from many factors:

nitrogen, oxygen or compressed-air consumption;

consumption and lifetime of protective windows, nozzles and other consumables;

actual cutting speed;

edge quality;

piercing time;

process stability;

machine downtime;

service requirements;

the correct combination of laser source and cutting head;

software and cutting parameters;

availability of spare parts and consumables.

A machine that costs less on the day it is purchased can therefore become considerably more expensive after several years of operation.

For me, the real question has never been only:

“How much does the machine cost?”

The more important question is:

“How much will every part produced on this machine cost the customer?”

The Right Configuration Matters More Than a Component List

Today, almost any machine builder can purchase a laser source, cutting head, CNC controller, servo motors and the other components required to build a fiber laser cutting machine.

Making three axes move and getting a laser to cut metal is no longer the most difficult part.

The difficult part is something else:

Building the right configuration for the customer's actual production requirements.

The laser source must work correctly with the cutting head. The mechanical structure and motion system must be capable of using the dynamics that the technology offers. The CNC control, cooling system, extraction, gas system, optics and all other components must work together as one complete system.

An expensive component alone does not make a good machine.

A good machine is the result of the right combination of components, application and customer requirements.

This is why at KARMET we pay so much attention to machine configuration and personally define the key components used in the solutions we offer.

A Fiber Laser Is Not Just Another Machine on the Factory Floor

Years ago, customers investing EUR 300,000 or more in a laser cutting machine asked very serious questions before placing an order.

Who will service the machine?

How quickly can we receive a spare part?

What happens if there is an optical problem?

What happens if the laser source stops?

How quickly can the service team respond?

There was a good reason for these questions.

The laser cutting machine often sits at the heart of the production process.

When it stops, sometimes it is not only one machine that stops. The disruption begins to affect downstream operations – bending, welding, assembly and ultimately delivery to the customer's own clients.

For this reason, service capability, spare-parts availability and fast access to consumables have never been optional extras for us.

They are part of the machine solution itself.

We Have Been Through These Problems Ourselves

Over the years, we have dealt with optical problems, laser source issues, mechanical problems, incorrect configurations and many other situations that arise in real industrial production.

Those experiences taught us what to avoid.

Today, when we configure a machine, we do not think only about how it will perform during a demonstration.

We think about how it will perform after thousands of production hours.

How will it be serviced?

Which consumables will it use?

What will it cost to operate?

And what will we do if something eventually goes wrong?

The customer should never be left alone trying to determine which component manufacturer is responsible or whom they need to contact.

We Will Never Tell Our Customer: “Call the Manufacturer”

This is a principle that is extremely important to me.

When KARMET delivers a machine, the responsibility to the customer is ours.

I do not believe the customer should become the intermediary between the machine supplier, the laser source manufacturer, the cutting-head manufacturer or any other component supplier.

If there is a problem, the customer calls KARMET.

It is our responsibility to find the solution.

That is how we have worked until today, and that is how we will continue to work.

Every Machine We Deliver Is Our Reference

One of the indicators that personally means far more to me than any advertising campaign is when a customer who already owns one of our machines purchases a second one.

And then a third.

We have customers operating more than three KARMET laser machines.

For me, this is one of the strongest answers to the question of whether we selected the right technology for that customer.

Because after the first machine, the customer is no longer buying a promise.

They are buying their own previous experience with KARMET.

That is why we say that every machine we deliver becomes a reference for us.

We Listen Before We Recommend

After 25 years in the industry, I strongly believe that a successful fiber laser investment does not begin with a catalogue, a price or a power rating.

It begins with listening.

We need to understand the customer's production, their problems, their expectations and their plans for future growth.

Only then should we select the technology.

Our goal at KARMET has never been simply to deliver a machine with an impressive cutting speed

Our goal is to provide a high-performance, reliable and economically sustainable production solutionthat helps the customer produce more, reduce the cost per part and achieve a strong return on investment.

Because at the end of the day, the customer does not make money from the kilowatts printed in a catalogue.

Nor do they make money from the maximum speed shown during a demonstration.

They make money from the parts the machine produces every day.

And after all these years, I still believe in one simple principle:

The fastest machine is the one that keeps running.

Erkan Ozgur Karali
Founder &
